Mission

From March 18 - March 26, the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations (ILIR) and the Illinois Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) organized and cosponsored a ten-day educational trip to Taiwan and Vietnam.

The international trip was the second trip to Asia led by Prof. John Lawler. The trip was organized as an optional component to the spring 2005 course LIR 566, International Human Resource Management as well as for business students with international interests. The objective of the study trip was to learn about human resource management practices in Taiwan and Vietnam through visits at local companies, subsidiaries of American corporations, and lectures by university professors. Members of the group consisted of four ILIR students, one MBA student, and three doctoral students.

During the lectures and visits, participants had many professional opportunities to meet with human resource managers and to study the history, economic development, and culture of Taiwan and Vietnam. The group was fortunate to have alumni and past visiting professors from the University of Illinois to serve as hosts in these countries. With their help and through company visits, the participants were able to get an accurate view of the human resources practices in Taiwan and Vietnam and develop a cultural and economic understanding.
