In
May 2002, the Illinois Center for International Business Education and
Research (CIBER) organized an educational trip to China. The objective
of the study tour was to explore aspects of doing business in China including
issues related to culture, economics, management, politics, and marketing.
Supported by stipends awarded by CIBER, fifteen students from the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign participated, led by Prof. Tailan Chi,
associate professor of international business, and by Prof. Joseph Cheng,
director of CIBER. Members of group consisted of 12 MBA students, two
doctoral students, and one undergraduate student.
In preparation for the
study tour, all students attended the MBA 405-International Business course
taught by Prof. Chi.The group visited Beijing and Shanghai. The tour
included lectures at the University of International Business and Economics
in Beijing, and Fudan University in Shanghai, visits to U.S. subsidiaries,
joint ventures, and Chinese-owned companies, as well as Chinese and U.S.
government agencies. During the lectures and visits, participants had
a range of cultural and recreational opportunities to meet with managers
and government officials in Beijing and Shanghai to learn about Chinese
business customs and culture.
