Mission

From March 18 - March 26, the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations (ILIR) and the Illinois Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) organized and cosponsored a ten-day educational trip to Beijing and Shanghai in China.

The international trip was the third trip to Asia led by Prof. John Lawler. The trip was organized as an optional component to the 2005 fall course LIR 566, International Human Resource Management as well as for business students with international interests. The objective of the study trip was to learn about human resource management practices in China and through visits at local companies, subsidiaries of American corporations, lectures by university professors and communications with local graduate students in HR field. Members of the group consisted of 13 ILIR graduate students and 1 ILIR doctoral student.

During the lectures and visits, participants had many professional opportunities to meet with human resource managers and to study the history, economic development, and culture of China. The group was fortunate to have alumni and past visiting professors from the ILIR Department of University of Illinois to serve as hosts in China. With their help and through company visits, the participants were able to get an accurate view of the human resources practices in China and develop a cultural and economic understanding.
