Mission
From May 19-28, 2003, the Institute of Labor
and Industrial Relations (ILIR) and the Illinois Center for International
Business Education and Research (CIBER) organized and cosponsored a ten-day
educational trip to Seoul, Korea, and Tokyo, Japan.
The study tour, led
by Prof. John Lawler, professor at ILIR, was an optional part of a graduate
course in international human resource management (LIR 466) taught in
the spring semester 2003. The objective of the study trip was to learn
about human resource management practices in Korea and Japan through visits
at local companies, subsidiaries of American corporations, and lectures
by university professors.Members of the group consisted of three ILIR
students, one MBA student, and one doctoral student.
During the lectures
and visits, participants had many professional opportunities to meet with
human resource managers and to experience Korean and Japanese business
and culture. Weekends and evenings were filled with discovering historic
sites, exploring the nightlife, and sampling delicious cuisine.
